Wood Fencing in Bloomington, IN

By BloomWorks Fencing & More • August 27, 2026

Wood fencing is the most common request we get inside Bloomington’s city limits, where small in-town lots, mature hardwoods, and hilly ground all decide how the fence line actually gets built.

Inside the city limits most of what we fence is a quarter-acre lot or smaller — Elm Heights, Bryan Park, the Near West Side, the blocks north of campus — and those lots usually back onto an alley or sit a few feet off the neighbor’s yard on two or three sides. That is why solid-board privacy is what people ask for in town, rather than the split-rail and field fence we install out in the county. A 6-foot board fence gives a small lot a usable back yard, and it does it without eating the two or three feet a hedge or a masonry wall would take.

The dig is the part that makes Bloomington different. Monroe County sits on limestone, and in town it is not unusual to hit rock or an old slab a foot or two down, so we bring a rock auger instead of assuming every post drops in clean. Posts still go a minimum of 30 inches, below the Indiana frost line, in pressure-treated lumber sized to the fence height — a 6-foot privacy run takes a heavier post and tighter spacing than a 4-foot picket. On a sloped back yard we decide up front whether the fence steps down with the grade or racks to follow it, because that changes the post count and the material list.

Before we quote, we walk the line with you and flag anything that could move it: a shared fence the neighbor already owns, grade that drains toward the house, roots from a mature oak or maple we would rather not cut through, and the city’s setback and height rules for your zone. Some near-downtown blocks sit in a local historic district where exterior work gets reviewed, which is worth knowing before material is ordered. Utility locates go in through Indiana 811 before anything is dug. Most residential wood installs run 1-3 weeks from a signed estimate, and every quote is itemized by material and labor.
